President Fidel Castro Ruz
President of the Republic of Cuba
Havana, Cuba
Dear Mr. President:
We write to request the immediate and unconditional release ofVladimiro Roca Antunes,
Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello, Rene Gomez Manzano, and Felix A. Bonne Carcases. One year
ago today these four individuals were detained and have been held since pending investigation
for counter-revolutionary activities.
The detention of these dissidents without trial strongly suggests they are being held
simply because they advocate peaceful political change. We believe such imprisorunent is
unjust. When you invited Pope John Paul II to Cuba and broadcast all of his outdoor masses
live, you demonstrated a willingness to let dissenting views be heard on the island. The release
of these four individuals would be in keeping with that spirit.
We note further that your willingness to release these four prisoners of conscience can
have only a positive impact on relations between our two countries.
Sincerely,
Lee H. Hamilton, M.C.
